Internship Experience at The Neuroaid and Research Foundation: A Journey of Learning and Growth

The Journey Begins

Internships are often seen as bridges between academic study and real-world practice, spaces where theoretical knowledge meets practical application. For me, however, my time at The Neuroaid and Research Foundation (NRF) went far beyond that. It was a truly transformative experience that deepened my commitment to developmental psychology and strengthened my desire to work with children with special needs.

Stepping into a Multidisciplinary World

From the very beginning, what struck me most about NRF was its integrated and collaborative approach to neurorehabilitation. The organization brings together experts from diverse fields, developmental therapy, child guidance counselling, occupational therapy, special education, and psychological counselling, who work collectively to support children and individuals with neurodevelopmental conditions.

As a psychology intern, being immersed in this multidisciplinary environment was both eye-opening and invaluable.

Learning Through Observation and Participation

During my internship, I had the opportunity to observe sessions, assist therapists, and engage directly with children. I learned how to assess sensory needs, contribute to behavioural planning, and adapt communication methods based on each child’s cognitive and emotional functioning.

A key learning was understanding how individualized care plans are designed, not just to address immediate concerns but also to foster long-term developmental growth.

Highlights from the NRF Summer Camp

One of the defining moments of my internship was being actively involved in NRF’s first summer camp. These weeks were filled with creative engagements, storytelling sessions, emotion-based games, and PACE activities promoting brain-body integration.

Working closely with children in this setting showed me how play therapy techniques can be applied in real time and how structured group activities foster social skills and emotional awareness.

The summer camp also taught me the importance of flexibility and patience. Each child came with their own energy, temperament, and unique needs. Adapting my approach while keeping therapeutic goals in focus became an important lesson.

Personal and Professional Growth

This internship has been instrumental in shaping my understanding of developmental psychology in practice. It reinforced my belief in early intervention, deepened my sensitivity toward neurodiversity, and fueled my desire to pursue further training in the field.

Most importantly, it helped me grow into a more empathetic, observant, and reflective learner.

Moving Forward

As I continue my journey in psychology, I carry forward the knowledge, experiences, and meaningful connections I built during my time at NRF. This internship not only enhanced my academic foundation but also strengthened my commitment to supporting children on their developmental journeys.
